Road Trip Fun!

We've had a great road trip so far! So far we've played 2 games at Grand Canyon University and came out with a tie and a win against one of the top teams in our Conference and Region. Congrats girls! We're so grateful for all our wonderful fans that came out to support our games and we can't wait to meet up with more friends and family in St. George. We've been here for two nights now and its been very different from the weather we faced in Arizona. All day we've had rain, thunder and lightning! and we've been wearing jackets!!! Quite different from the weather we thought we'd see. Today we face a season defining game against Dixie State. They are a very strong team in the conference and will present a great challenge. You can follow our game with live stats here! We play at 1pm Mountain Standard Time.

Q&A with Kami Strait

Kami is a junior defender from Colorado Springs.  She has led a solid Seasider defensive line for 3 years now and has been elected captain for the past 2 years.  She is known for her lightning fast ability to chase down forwards and really white teeth.

BYUH vs SPU

Here's a behind the scenes look at our game vs SPU on Wednesday. Although we didn't get the win, everyone battled hard the entire 110 minutes. We definitely have something to be proud of.

Here's the write up from our sports media department.

BYUH Ties #17 Seattle Pacific
Waipio, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer battled 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific through two overtimes tonight without either team finding the net in a 0-0 non-conference match at the Waipio Soccer Stadium.  The Seasiders and Falcons both had scoring opportunities during the course of the game but neither could generate a score over 110 minutes of play.

Seattle Pacific, picked as the favorite in the Great Northwest Conference this season, out-shot the Seasiders by a 29-11 margin but BYU–Hawaii freshman goalie Megan McCain saved 11 shots in turning in her second shutout of the season in as many matches for the 1-0-1 Seasiders.  Maddie Dickinson made six saves for Seattle Pacific in turning in her third straight shutout for the 2-0-1 Falcons.

BYU–Hawaii’s defense was tested severely by the Falcons, who got off 12 shots in both the first and second halves and five more in the two overtime periods, but refused to succumb to the pressure.  Kami Strait and Rachel Johnson led the defense in repeatedly turning away the Seattle Pacific attack.

BYU–Hawaii’s next game will be on September 18th against Hawaii Pacific in Kaneohe.  Game time is set for the Pacific West Conference contest at 3:00 pm.

Labor Day Beach Day

So we've all just finished off our First Term of school and now we get a week off before the next semester starts....so of course we all hit the beach. We went to the famous Waimea Beach, then to Acai Bowls, then off to scout SPU for our big game on Wednesday!

Catching Up

Here's the first post of our brand new blog.  We hope to keep this updated at least weekly so all you out there that love Seasider soccer can keep up with us.  In later weeks, you can look forward to player interviews, behind the practice interviews, and updates on our season.

Ok, so we're already 3 weeks into our season, but we thought we'd go back and remember some of our fun preseason team moments.  Our first two weeks of training was pretty intense and we definately say that our coaches know how to work us hard.  But lucky for us, we know how to play harder. Here's some memories from our adventures so far.

Team Hike to Maunawilli Falls
We left after one of our 6AM practices for Maunawilli, it was about a 45 minute hike to a beautiful waterfall. It was pretty crowded when we got there, but of course our team knows how to clear a path! We all squeezed our way up onto the waterfall and jumped off!

Trip to PCC
After double days were finished we were treated to a behind the scenes tour of PCC by our own Coach Mahoni.  He took us to the prayer meeting for the dancers, and we got to see how they get ready for each night.  He showed us all around the backstage and explained how the show works.  Then we got great seats for the show.....Thanks Coach!!
coach kacky and coach tire performing for us backstage
of course we took team pictures everywhere
Ash, Britt, Brenna, and Kami posing with one of Coach Mahoni's sons right after he danced at the nightshow

Team Dinner
We can eat almost as well as we can have fun, so of course we've had multiple team dinners. at Mearn's house, we had hawaiian haystacks and got to know each other; at Haliewa Eats for Britt's birthday bash! at Brenna and Kami's house for making team goals, and then for our pre-game against Regis, we all met at Coach Kacky's mansion and had delicious lasagna.
at haleiwa eats (thai food) for britt's birthday.
in coach kacky's mansion
after dinner at mearnsy's

Some other great activities that we've also gotten to do are
  • Big and Little Sisters-Everyone on the team gets assigned a sister and we are responsible for looking out for our sister, motivating them, and most importantly making sure they're not late for practice!
  • Fireside with the Men's Team- Coach Mahoni and his family put together an awesome fireside for us and the men's team.  We got to listen to some amazing musical numbers and hear testimony's from our coaches.

  • BEAT REGIS!- after 2 weeks of hard work, we earned a very well deserved 4-0 win over Regis University, a Colorado DII school.
some of our freshman, excited after their first collegiate win! (makelle, kaci, kassy, kim 2)
